Normally I save my musings for later in the evening, but today...I wanted to hit the blog while lunch was still weighing me down like a 400 pound anchor.
I told the boys during pool (more on that later) that I am not a big fan of Mexican food, but rather...I am a huge fan of Mexcian restaurants (as evidenced by me picking three in a row). All that aside, I did order the Burrito de Chorizo and got a good one. Sure, it had sour cream and tamatoes (I asked for both to be left off)...but it was still good.
Now, when you go to Taco Loco, park any thoughts of it being a cutesy chain restaurant on the curb...this place is authentic. It probably wouldn't hurt you to brush up on your Spanish before going (hell, take a dictionary if you can) since the menu is mostly in Spanish and the Spanglish we were throwing at the waitress only confused her more.
SOME ADVICE: Most places offer chips when while you wait (Taco Loco is no exception), but this place has pool tables in the bar while you wait! For fifty cents...rack 'em up and wait for your meal to show up at the table.
My Spanish is still not all that good, but it's obvious to me that "Taco Loco" translates to "Taco Train"...and EVERYBODY likes trains!
I have been to Taco Loco a few times over the years, but it's been a long time since my last visit. They have vastly improved the joint from the way I remember it - adding a bar w/ pool tables, another dining room, and festive colors. In fact it was so nice, Jackie didn't even bother to clutch her purse tightly to her chest! I'm happy to report that they kept the iron bars on the windows though, no doubt to "keep it real" for the old school crew.
The food remains great as always. I had the Burrito de Chile Relleno - a stuffed pepper burrito, and an order of Papas Fritas. I had never had either at the Taco Train, and while the burrito was great, I was somewhat disappointed that the Papas Fritas. I was expecting the Con Rajas variety...but simply got regular ol' french fries, which were good but just not the same.
While I went w/ a burrito this time, I highly recommended anything w/ Mole sauce at Taco Loco. Trust me.
ADDED BONUS: Inexplicably, there are several paintings of Al Capone hanging in the bar, and one even comes complete w/ faux blood "dripping" down the side. Nice touch!
Welcome to the official blog of the International Dining Society. Originally founded in 1932 by two brothers, the IDS was resurrected in 2005 and has been going strong ever since! The goal...to find interesting lunch options on which to dine and to spread the word of said options to the masses who struggle with the day to day choices of McDonald's versus Burger King.
