Los Portales owns the distinction as the first IDS restaurant to make me feel like crap for the rest of the afternoon after eating there.
I had a barbacoa burrito. No one else did. I felt sick. No one else felt sick. Verdict: Don't try the barbacoa buritto.
The prices are great though & the atmosphere is authentic Mexican. I'd be willing to give the place another shot...but next time it'll be at 2 in the morning after stumbling out of the Rue Marche, since I'll be well on my way to being "sick" at that point already.
ADDED BONUS: Jukebox chock full o' Mexican music, which they will GLADLY crank up.
I promised myself long ago that I would never, EVER mix eggs and Mexican food. Don't ask me why, but I have a feeling the chicken farms are about as sanitary as the strip club toilet.
HOWEVER...I've broken that Golden Rule.
Twice.
When in Cozumel, I ate at a joint where I had a bacon and egg sammich damn near every morning and now...I found myself at Los Portales getting the egg torta.
All in all...a great find (and yes, I know it was my pick, I was talking about the sammich, ass) and I would recommend the egg torta to whoever listens.
SOME ADVICE: Don't confuse strip club toilets with breakfast cuisine (or for that matter, don't confuse strip club cuisine with any type of cuisine)...AND, when Los Portales asks you if you want chips, say "no".
Welcome to the official blog of the International Dining Society. Originally founded in 1932 by two brothers, the IDS was resurrected in 2005 and has been going strong ever since! The goal...to find interesting lunch options on which to dine and to spread the word of said options to the masses who struggle with the day to day choices of McDonald's versus Burger King.
