  • Phainam? More like PHAINAMINAL! Legend has it that this restaurant was started by an old asian woman with a split personality that couldn't remember if she was Laotion or Thai, so she hedged her bets and served both types of cuisine

I had a dish that was made w/ noodles, shredded pork, peanuts, & red chili sauce served in a bowl roughly the size of Nate's head. Not sure what it was called, but it started w/ "Meek". It was fantastic, once you got past the leaves on top that gave the first layer a strange taste. Highly recommended.

Phainam also has a grocery store out front filled with various Thai, Laotion, & Vietnamese foodstuffs & sundries.

ADDED BONUS: Shawn & I did some grocery shopping. I picked up some coconut candy w/ what appeared to be the Vietnamese version of "Pop" from Rice Crispies fame on the packaging. Meanwhile, Shawn purchased some "White Rabbit" which I assume is some kind of slang for heroin.

  • So, who wants to go to an Oriental Market on Broadway for lunch?

    Not me!

I mean, I've seen better signage for garage sales than I have for this "restaurant".

HOWEVER, I was impressed...VERY impressed. Admittedly, I wasn't sure what I was getting into when we had to go through the little market to get to the dining room, but honestly, that added to the charm. Hell...I was able to find some White Rabbit candies as well. I haven't seen those since I was in Chinatown in San Francisco.

I wish I could tell you what I ordered, but I can't. It was a dish similar to the always safe Chop Suey that EVERY Asian joint serves. What made this dish different? Hands down, it was the noodles. I'm willing to bet that Phainam has an army of 40 pound pre-teens whipping up eggs noodles all night long. If they don't...they should, because only the sweat, blood and tears of those little fellas could have made these noodles the delite that they are.

SOME ADVICE: As Ryan said, take a stroll through the market and pick up some candy, you'll be surprised at how pleased you'll walk out. My bag of White Rabbits cost me UNDER $1.25, so, like in Chinatown, I emerged from the market a happy giant.
